No in Disguise

Multimedia Installation, 2018

No in Disguise is a continuation of research on online dating platforms, privacy, and masculinity. After algorithmically identifying misogyny in user's profiles on OkCupid, we engaged these men in conversation using non-violent communication tactics to better understand why they felt comfortable expressing sexist attitudes on a dating website.

We then invited male-identifying members of the local community to read the transcripts of the conversations for the camera. Afterward, the readers were invited to give their own thoughts on what they just read. The resulting footage shows men engaging in thoughtful and nuanced conversations about consent and masculinity that isn't typically seen in mainstream media.

Presented at the ACM SIGGRAPH 2019 conference with the paper “No in Disguise: Algorithmically Targeted Conversations About Sexual Consent in a Multimedia Art Installation.”
