		<description>Midgray (Kris Blackmore and Simon Boas) is a multidisciplinary studio that experiments with art and design to create projects that do not necessarily culminate in a product. They examine language, attention, gender performance, privacy, and consent through outputs that span digital and print media, moving images, interactive installations, curatorial projects, workshops, and games. The artists have exhibited internationally with institutions and publications including Sundance New Frontier, Eyebeam, ACM SIGGRAPH, the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, Carnation Contemporary, and the Institute of Network Cultures. Their work has received awards from The Harold and Arlene Schnitzer Foundation, the Oregon Arts Commission and the University of California.

&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; —Alice Moore Dunbar-NelsonThe art and design duo Midgray (Kris Blackmore and Simon Boas), with artist Pat Boas, presents new bodies of work that reflect on the cyclical nature of repression, resilience, and resignation. Approaching these themes through seemingly distinct mediums, the artists examine the floods of information that have swept us into this particular cultural and political moment. Together they question how we can imagine alternatives as we struggle to keep our heads above water.In her collection of textile pieces and home goods, Kris Blackmore draws from the cultural and personal anxiety that has accompanied our gradual and then sudden transition into a post-Roe society. These works are both historical and speculative in nature. Looking back and then forward in time, they implore the viewer to consider the urgency of our present situation.Through symbolism and the encoding of vital healthcare information these works recall the ways women throughout time and place have found ways to communicate about their lives and oppression via skills frequently discounted by the art market and patriarchal societies as frivolous craft. Simultaneously, references to binary code and viral maker movements situate us in the modern day. As states ban abortions, social media has proven its effectiveness as a source of information, distribution, and coordination for those seeking to terminate. Conversely, it’s a reminder of the role digital surveillance plays in maintaining control over the reproductive autonomy of marginalized groups. Simon Boas investigates how digital mass media normalizes violence. By leveraging artificial intelligence to break apart and rearrange news imagery into a smooth gradient of predicted emotional responses, he attempts to regulate–to an absurd degree–the level of chaos to which we are exposed every day. In another work, Boas records the initial moments of every first-person shooter video game he played up until the age at which he was legally permitted to purchase a firearm. The recordings reveal a motif: Time and time again, he is taught to fire a virtual gun at a living being. Taken together, these works form an inquiry into the patterns made palatable through modern technology as well as the limits of the technologies that enforce those patterns.Exhibited at Carnation Contemporary December 3, 2022-January 1, 2023

Slow Friction
Exhibition, 2021

&#60;img width="2000" height="1354" width_o="2000" height_o="1354" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/f0bad2be0f32a0f4b35605b76a177786ba40740cbe271fb6c4ed297e091ace33/_PRIMARY-IMAGE_Boas-Slow-Friction-DSC_8780-HDR-web.jpeg" data-mid="111480418" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/f0bad2be0f32a0f4b35605b76a177786ba40740cbe271fb6c4ed297e091ace33/_PRIMARY-IMAGE_Boas-Slow-Friction-DSC_8780-HDR-web.jpeg" /&#62;

Slow Friction presents a collection of explorations into the extremes of attention in the age of seamless user experiences. Internet platforms go to great lengths to make today’s world look like a polished product at all times. Clever bits of interface design are pasted over stammers in service caused by poor connectivity. These visual apologies seek to hold our monetized attention by reducing the seams we experience in our role as both a consumer and product.New work by the art and design duo Midgray (Kris Blackmore and Carnation Contemporary member Simon Boas) and sound artist Keith McGraw reframes the fleeting, expectant moments in which we encounter technological glitches as important human experiences worthy of deeper investigation. The works on display span diverse forms—print, textiles, smartphone screenshots, and writing—surrounding an installation that presents a single digital image one pixel at a time over the course of weeks, transforming each color into immersive sound and light.Exhibited at Carnation Contemporary April 17-May 2, 2021
Installation Focus: Quartet for the End of Time (13.5 Days)

"Quartet for the End of Time (13.5 Days)" presents a single digital image—a "loading" image captured from Instagram—one pixel at a time over the course of weeks, transforming each color into immersive sound and light. The light marches through suspended bulbs, pausing only for a single second. The sound follows the chords of synesthetic composer Olivier Messiaen’s most well known piece, "Quartet for the End of Time," which he wrote and premiered while he was a prisoner of war. The same numerical values that drive the lights influence the sound. As a result of the acoustic phenomenon called "beating," interference causes the chords to sound more chaotic when the values that drive them are very similar but not identical. As such, the sound exposes the subtle changes that are only evident in the lights when the audience has been watching for long spans of time.

Last Night
INTERACTIVE Narrative Installation, 2021

&#60;img width="1280" height="800" width_o="1280" height_o="800" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/7185a49c95ed88a11383b38dec6f2f2d0359c05bbaeab206321313a06d71a7c6/Last-Night-Promo-Image.jpeg" data-mid="104697849" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/7185a49c95ed88a11383b38dec6f2f2d0359c05bbaeab206321313a06d71a7c6/Last-Night-Promo-Image.jpeg" /&#62;

Last Night is a chooseable-path work of young adult fiction that provides a safe place for teens to experiment with the boundaries of ethical sexual behavior. Readers navigate an archetypical college party scene and make decisions about consuming alcohol, pursuing hookups, and testing friendships. Sex is explored in scenes that reflect real-world scenarios in which consent is often assumed due to body language, shared histories, or physical proximity. There are 14 possible endings, some of which involve your character getting hurt or hurting others. This framework allows young people to explore the ways power can be experienced and wielded— a person might assume a great deal of power in one sexual encounter, but be made to feel powerless in another.This story borrows from author and designer Kris Blackmore’s life experiences, and is based on primary research Midgray has conducted with men about their views on consent. Researchers Erica Boas, Jason Laker, Peggy Orenstein, Lisa Wade, Jennifer S. Hrisch, and Shaus Khan expanded our understanding of the pressures young people face from the media, their peers, and institutions to do college right— which includes hooking up a lot. This leads many students to believe that whatever amount of sex they are having is not enough and drives them toward risky sexual behavior. This pressure in conjunction with low literacy in regards to sexual health, consent, and pornography has created a public health crisis on campuses— a burden that is commonly carried by female students in their first six months of their college careers.

The installation immerses visitors in a dreamlike space that is reminiscent of a college dorm room. Elements from the written story manifest in the physical space, blurring the boundary between fiction and reality. The interactive story can be experienced on a monitor at the desk, but the only place to sit is on someone else’s bed.

Exhibited at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at PSU January-May 2021.

Digital objects may appear minute relative to the physical objects we throw away every day, but they aren’t without palpable heft. Everything digital is stored on physical memory, and when that memory gets full, old, slow, or unstylish, we throw it away. Even digital objects in the cloud live in massive data centers scattered about the earth, and we use a large portion of it to store our trash. We process hundreds, thousands of pieces of media from the web every week, deliberately downloading images or caching streamed audio and video. Those objects pass from the web through our bodies and desktops before ending up trashed or recycled. As they accumulate, what stories do those objects tell? What residue do they leave?
Trash Club is an exquisite corpse of digital garbage made from the trash bins on particpating artists’ computers. First, we uploaded a file from the trash bin on our computer. Then, an artist combined that file with trash from their own computer. Every week a different artist took the file created the previous week and repeated the process. The creations, ranging from poetry to video performances, are featured online at&#38;nbsp;traaaaash.club.

Who are the people inside your virtual assistants?
What is not readily apparent to users of Alexa, Amazon’s voice-activated AI assistant, is that several people at an office will listen to and transcribe every word said to an Alexa-enabled device, amounting to thousands of utterances a day. These workers are timed to the second and are required to treat all language they hear, from banalities to hate speech, as neutral data in pursuit of improving Alexa’s artificial intelligence. To make the machine appear more human, the workers are treated as machines.
Hold That Task. This is On. injects utterances of beauty into the human labor of transcribing the things people say to their Alexa AI assistants. We invite visitors to affirm the humanity of the workers on the other side of Alexa by reading to them micro works of poetry, literature, inspiration, and comedy.
Collaboration with Catherine Chen

No in Disguise is a continuation of research on online dating platforms, privacy, and masculinity. After algorithmically identifying misogyny in user's profiles on OkCupid, we engaged these men in conversation using non-violent communication tactics to better understand why they felt comfortable expressing sexist attitudes on a dating website.

We then invited male-identifying members of the local community to read the transcripts of the conversations for the camera. Afterward, the readers were invited to give their own thoughts on what they just read. The resulting footage shows men engaging in thoughtful and nuanced conversations about consent and masculinity that isn't typically seen in mainstream media.

Presented at the ACM SIGGRAPH 2019 conference with the paper “No in Disguise: Algorithmically Targeted Conversations About Sexual Consent in a Multimedia Art Installation.”

Yes in Disguise
Trading Card Collection, 2016

&#60;img width="2048" height="1365" width_o="2048" height_o="1365" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/f2416bea7b25e2bc1a1ca20a9c8befdf091c14a5f38402764e12f4e76105246c/yid_05.jpg" data-mid="72823701" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/f2416bea7b25e2bc1a1ca20a9c8befdf091c14a5f38402764e12f4e76105246c/yid_05.jpg" /&#62;

Yes in Disguise is a limited edition of trading cards made from the publicly available dating profile data of men who have made misogynistic statements online.
OkCupid is a dating website that holds a great deal of information about heterosexual male users and their views on women and sexual consent. All that’s required to access this data is a free profile, which anyone can easily create. When completing a profile, users are asked to answer multiple-choice questions on personal preferences, identity, and sexual proclivities. When asked about consent, some choose the answer: "A no is really a yes in disguise."
In response, we repurposed data points such as these to produce a limited edition of trading cards that dissolves the illusion of privacy and gives weight to sexism expressed online.

The Facebook page titled “Santa Cruz County Mugshots” publishes police booking photos of people arrested in Santa Cruz County, California, to “make a safe county for the great people of Santa Cruz”—well before a court judges the arrested innocent or guilty. In Voyeuroboros, the picture and name of every person who has given a “like” or other emoji reaction to posts on the “Santa Cruz County Mugshots” Facebook page have been printed on a single sheet of paper. Copies of this paper are attached to the wall in a stacke for the audience to take with them, and a live-streaming camera conspicuously mounted above the stack captures an image of every gallery visitor who takes a copy. A QR code brings the audience face-to-face with their own image by revleaing the live-stream video on their personal smartphone.
No one featured or participating in this project has explicitly consented to having images of themselves disseminated for the entertainment of others, yet they are unable to control their images. Voyeuroboros invites visitors to examine their own participation in the attention economy that sustains industries ranging from for-profit mugshot websites to ubiquitous social media platforms.
